Gurdaspur Lok Sabha MP Sukhjinder Randhawa has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an independent inquiry into the conduct of Krishan Kumar, Principal Secretary (Irrigation), for allegedly withholding funds for the maintenance of flood defences.

This comes a day after Sanaur AAP legislator Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra had alleged that alleged that senior Irrigation Department officers “misled” the state government on the release of water into rivers and permissions to de-silt riverbeds.

He had alleged Kumar ignored repeated pleas of allowing the use of soil from the Tangri and the Ghaggar to strengthen banks.

Terming it a matter of national security, he said breaches in the river make it impossible for Indian infantry of armoured vehicles to mobilise in case of an eventuality. “An inquiry should be conducted independently, so that responsibility could be fixed,” he said.
