A week after submitting a complaint to the police, accusing three men of kidnapping his wife, a 39-year-old old Dalit labourer allegedly hanged himself at his house at Chak Tamkot village here this afternoon.
After receiving a complaint from deceased Jagmeet Singh’s minor daughter, Vijay Sampla, chairman, National Commission for Scheduled Castes, issued a notice to the Muktsar DC and SSP seeking an action-taken report within 15 days.
The victim, in his suicide note recovered from the scene, claimed he was taking the step because of police inaction, said Sampla.
The victim’s daughter claimed: “Three men — Khushbag Singh, Chhinder Bhagwan Singh and Gora Singh, kidnapped my mother. My father couldn’t trace her. My father had informed the Lakhewali police about the matter on July 30, a day prior to the kidnapping, and also submitted a written complaint. At the time, the accused were issuing threats to kill me and my father.”
She said: “My father met a DSP yesterday and requested him to trace my mother, but to no avail.”
In a written statement, Sampla said: “Taking strong notice over the suicide of Dalit man, the commission has asked the authorities concerned to submit an action-taken report before August 25. If the report is not received within the stipulated time, the commission may exercise the powers of the civil court conferred on it under Article 338 of the Constitution and issue summon for personal appearance before the commission in Delhi.”
SSP D Sudarvizhi said: “A case has been registered against four persons. Further probe had been started.”
A senior cop, however, claimed the deceased in his suicide note had sought action against three men and a woman. “He has nowhere written about police inaction,” he claimed. — TNS
