A large number of passengers on a train being run by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) between Nangal and Bhakra Dam had a narrow escape when two of its coaches derailed today. No one was injured as the train was running at a speed of 10 km per hour.

The 13-km long Nangal-Bhakra rail track was laid 76 years ago in 1948 to transport workers and machinery for the construction of the Bhakra Dam.

The train left at 3 pm from Nangal today and when it was near Nehla village around 3.30 pm, two of its coaches right behind the engine got derailed. As the driver was able to apply the brakes immediately, no one was injured and all passengers were ferried by buses of the BBMB.

Deputy Chief Engineer of the mechanical wing of Bhakra dam HL Kamboj, who reached the spot, said that the track of the train got damaged in the accident and it would be repaired soon. The higher authorities are planning to undertake major renovation work of the track and the train, following which there would be no such incident again, he added.
