Sandhu was elected in the recent bypoll held following the death of sitting MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. A former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator, he left the party earlier this year to join the Aam Aadmi Party.

He secured victory in the November 14 election, defeating the SAD candidate by a margin of more than 12,000 votes.
