Not waiting for the cash-strapped state government to allocate funds for social welfare schemes, sarpanch Jagmeet Singh Sandhu of Basti Labh Singh Wali has announced a slew of sops at his own level.

This includes “shagun” of Rs 31,000 for marriage of the needy girls, Rs 5,100 for new born baby girl, besides Rs 5,100 monthly salary for gurdwara granthi of the village and financial assistance to students for secondary and higher education.

Sandhu, 37, who was elected unanimously for the post of sarpanch, said, “Though there will be an additional expenditure of few lakhs per year, which I am hopeful that I will be able to manage.”
