NSUI gives Rs51,000 to athlete Kamalpreet

Akshay Sharma, president, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Punjab, today gave Rs 51,000 to Kamalpreet Kaur, who broke the nine-year-old national record in discus throw on Friday and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.

Akshay today visited Kamalpreet’s residence at Kabarwala village here, and said her hard work and dedication would inspire the youth to take up sports as a career.

Meanwhile, Manisha Gulati, chairperson, Punjab State Commission for Women, too congratulated Kamalpreet Kaur over phone today.

Kamalpreet said, “The chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women today congratulated me through a video call and said she will appoint me ambassador of the commission.”

Manisha Gulati was not available for comments.

Kamalpreet is the first woman discus thrower from India with a throw of 65.06 metres, a record she created during the Federation Cup National Athletics in Patiala.

Former MP Jagmeet Singh also visited Kamalpreet’s residence to congratulate her.
