Muktsar, August 1

It sounds strange, but true — there is a Government Primary Smart School at Chak Jawahrewala village that has 175 students but just one teacher!

Normally, 130 students come to school daily in pre-primary classes (LKG, UKG) and primary classes (Class I to V). In the present situation, this teacher keeps moving from one room to the other to attend all students. Besides teaching, other works related to the school keeps him occupied. Sources said this school had five teachers earlier, but three of them were transferred recently and one teacher was transferred just three months back. Villagers said the school has good infrastructure, but lacks staff.

“The school has 175 students, but surprisingly the state government has transferred teachers from here. We have raised the issue with the authorities concerned and are hopeful that more teachers will be sent here soon,” said Varinder Dhillon, former sarpanch of Chak Jawahrewala village.

Some others residents said the state government was trying to adopt the Delhi model on the one hand, but on the other, existing schools with such a large number of students were facing acute staff shortage.

On this, Prabhjot Kaur, District Education Officer (Primary), Muktsar, said: “There are 175 students and just one teacher at the Government Primary School in Chak Jawahrewala village. More teachers will be sent there in a day or two. We have acute shortage of staff in the rural areas. Teachers are not willing to work in such areas. We are hopeful that the government will soon give us more staff.”
