Phagwara shuts over attack on Sena leader; 6 booked

Phagwara on Wednesday observed a complete bandh over a violent attack on Punjab Shiv Sena vice-president Inderjit Karwal and his son Zimmi Karwal. The assault, carried out by a group of armed assailants, has sparked outrage among Hindu organisations, which have called for swift and decisive police action.

SSP Gaurav Toora, along with SP Madhvi Sharma, said the city police have registered a case under Sections 109, 126(2), 190, 191(3) and 25 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita against Tanish, alias Binda, Sunil Salhotra, both residents of Balmiki Mohalla, and four others.

SHO Usha Rani, in her complaint, said around 6:25 pm near Gaushala Bazar, a group, which included Tanish  and Sunil, allegedly intercepted the father-son duo and launched a brutal assault on them. The FIR details accusations of brutal thrashing with the alleged intent to kill, followed by gunshots fired to terrorise the public.

The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital. SP Sharma indicated that the incident might be linked to personal enmity. SSP Toora assured the injured and their supporters of arresting the accused soon. Additional forces were deployed across the city to maintain order amid the rising public anger.

Leaders from various Hindu organisations visited the hospital and held discussions with the administration. Expressing concern over law and order, they demanded the immediate arrest of all assailants. Supported by MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal and Mayor Ram Paul Uppal, leaders pressed the state government to ensure strict action against those responsible.

On Wednesday, Phagwara came to a standstill. Markets, shops, and commercial establishments remained closed as part of the citywide shutdown called by the Shiv Sena and other groups. The Bar Association of Phagwara observed "No Work Day", condemning the heinous act. The bandh was peaceful as the police patrolled sensitive areas through the day.

Speaking to the media, Karwal criticised the administration for failing to curb rising crime and reiterated his demand for justice.
