The Global Sikh Council (GSC) has sought an amendment to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925, to make Akal Takht autonomous. The current provisions enabled government intervention in gurdwara administration and delay in Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections, it said. GSC president Dr Kanwaljit Kaur said the original intent of the Act was to return control of gurdwaras to practising Sikhs, but the legislation lacked provisions to make any amendments.
