Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsA fortnight after launching their protest, members of the Bharti Kisan Union (Sidhupur) were forcibly removed by the police from the Warring toll plaza on the Muktsar-Kotkapura road today. The police also removed their trailers stationed at the site, under the supervision of SP (D) Manmeet Singh.
Notably, the farmers had declared the plaza toll-free on August 27, alleging that the private company operating it had failed to fulfil key conditions, including constructing bridges over the Rajasthan and Sirhind feeder canals. Despite repeated assurances, commuters continued to face difficulties crossing the canals safely, the farmers claimed.
The plaza had earlier remained closed for nearly two years following a tragic bus accident in 2023 that claimed eight lives. Some farmers were detained during the operation. Senior farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal condemned the episode and demanded the immediate release of the farmers, warning the administration of potential protests if their demands weren’t met.
