The state government has decided to revive the Chaudhary canal in Fazilka district. It was shut in 1969.

According to sources, the state government will spend around Rs 5.09 crore on the project to revive the 5-km-long canal. It will be relined from southern canal pillar number 15,500 to 16,500.

The canal will provide irrigation and drinking water to seven tail-end villages, including Ghattian Wali Jattan, Ghattian Wali Bodla, Chak Kheo Wali, Chahlan Wala, Tahliwala Bodla, Singh Pura and Islamewala in Jalalabad subdivision of Fazilka district.

Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Kamboj said with the relining of the canal, a long-pending demand of a number of villages would be fulfilled. He said the state government’s priority was to provide canal water to all villages.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
