Punjab Police deploy Ghatak teams, additional companies in border districts

To bolster security along the 553-kilometer-long India-Pakistan border in Punjab, the Punjab Police have deployed specialized Ghatak teams, accompanied by 14 additional companies, to enhance surveillance and maintain a robust second line of defence.

This initiative spans across seven police districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Batala, Amritsar Rural, Tarntaran, Ferozepur, and Fazilka. Coordinated efforts are being maintained in close collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Army authorities to ensure a vigilant presence along the border.

To further strengthen border security management, the Punjab Police have deployed specialized forces, including SOG Hits, SSG, and Ghatak teams, accompanied by bulletproof vehicles. In conjunction with the BSF, 73 well-equipped nakas have been established at strategic points, enhancing the second line of defence. Additionally, Village Defence Committees (VDCs), composed of both youth and experienced members, have been formed throughout the border areas to support local security measures.

At the state level, a detailed meeting was held between Chief Secretary of Punjab with senior Army officials of the Western Command, at Chandimandir. The discussions focused on meeting all the requirements of the Army in the region. Additionally, District Inspectors General of Police, District Collectors, and Senior Superintendents of Police have conducted multiple meetings with Army and BSF authorities to ensure real-time coordination and communication. Safe movement of Army vehicles and security for cantonments and other establishments are being prioritized, with Punjab Police providing bulletproof vehicles to BSF officers for their forward locations.

To enhance rear area security and safeguard Army installations, 14 additional armed companies of Punjab Police have been deployed in bordering districts. A state-level control room, along with district-level control rooms, has been established to ensure seamless communication and coordination among all security forces. Mock drills involving Civil Defence workers are being conducted across all districts to prepare for any potential security challenges, underscoring the commitment of Punjab police and support agencies to maintain peace and security in the region.

Already an alert was sounded throughout the state on Wednesday, prompting police to engage in active operations over the past 15 days. These operations include night domination initiatives and comprehensive checks at various locales such as hotels, railway stations, bus stands, crowded places, malls, and vital installations. These efforts are aimed at creating a secure environment for residents and maintaining order in the region.
