According to a police officer, both had consumed a pesticide due to mental stress caused by increasing debt burden, which ran into lakhs of rupees.

Balwinder Singh, a former sarpanch of Shahpur Kalan village in the Cheema area, said Jagroop Singh (35) took the extreme step on Tuesday while Lovepreet Singh (25) died by suicide on Monday.

The sarpanch said Jagroop owned four acres. Lovepreet owned just an acre and a half.

Station House Officer (SHO) Manjit Singh confirmed that both died by suicide.

Both farmers were cremated at the village on Tuesday following a post-mortem.
