Rain to boost wheat yield, say experts

Rain lashed most parts of Punjab, including the Malwa belt, during the past 48 hours easing out foggy weather conditions. Agriculture experts said rain at this point of time was beneficial for wheat, mustard and other rabi crops.

Moga and Ferozepur districts received an average of 8-10 mm of rainfall in various blocks during the past two days.

Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, an agriculture expert, said the widespread rainfall had increased soil moisture, which was required for normal development of wheat plant at this stage. Since rain was the best source of natural nitrogen, it increased the nutrient uptake efficiency of the plants, he said.

The farmers were presently busy sprinkling the second dose of urea on the wheat crop. Rain is likely to boost the wheat yield, he added.

Meanwhile, agriculture officials in Moga and its adjoining districts claimed that that there were no reports of yellow rust on wheat plants, which was also a good sign for the farmers.
