To ensure the safety of girls, the district administration has started to distribute pepper spray cans among girl students under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme.

Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said the Women and Child Development Department would distribute 550 pepper spray cans in the first phase.

“The girls, when faced with any problem, can use pepper spray. The spray has ingredients which won’t cause a permanent damage to the eyes, but will visually impair the attacker for 30 to 45 minutes. This will act as a self-defense tool and will also empower the girls to feel safe,” said DC Thori.

The Deputy Commissioner said the Sangrur administration was committed to providing a safe environment to women, and the police department officials had also been directed to keep a constant vigil to ensure the safety of women. “Various other initiatives have been taken up under the BBBP scheme to make people aware about the rights of women. The district administration has also dedicated wall portraits and calendars to girl achievers at various locations. In a bid to motivate parents to empower their daughters, free coaching for competitive examinations and free car driving learning classes have been started in Sangrur,” said DC Thori.
