The move, announced during the recent G7 Summit, includes the appointment of new High Commissioners in both countries, a significant development following months of strained ties.
Calling it a “moment of much-needed reset”, Sahney said the decision would bring immense relief to Indian citizens, particularly members of the diaspora in Canada who have long awaited regular and timely visa services.
“This will ease the hardship faced by our NRI brothers and sisters, many of whom have been struggling to reunite with families or travel to their homeland due to stalled visa operations,” he said.
Highlighting the economic stakes, Sahney noted that bilateral trade between India and Canada touched $8.2 billion in 2024, while Canadian investments in India surpassed $55 billion. He emphasised the importance of restoring and strengthening the economic corridor between the two nations.
“India imports over 63 per cent potash from Canada and is a significant consumer of Canadian lentils and edible oils. With restored diplomatic normalcy, we must energise this economic corridor to serve the interests of both nations,” he added.
