Several persons attacked Sukhjit Singh (26), Sarpanch of Chhanna Gulab Singh Wala village, near Bhadaur, in Barnala district, with sharp edged weapons yesterday. The sarpanch reportedly sustained serious injuries and died on the way to Barnala Civil Hospital. In this attack, Amarjit Singh, father of Sukhjit, also sustained injuries.

As per sources the incident took place in Chhanna Gulab Singh Wala village after an alleged altercation between the deceased and the opposite party. At the time of the attack the sarpanch was at his residence.

Barnala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Malik said as per preliminary information after an altercation with the sarpanch the opposite party gathered a few persons and attacked him. The SSP said the police had initiated a probe.
