The Gurdaspur police is a worried lot as intelligence agencies have indicated that anti-social elements may create trouble on the Republic Day.

This is not good news for security personnel as they are already fighting battle on several fronts, including bringing down drones carrying arms, and narcotics in border villages.

Senior officers admit that there are threats and these need to be handled carefully lest the all-important event goes haywire.

Officers point out the recent incidents of police establishments being attacked with impunity by the gangsters associated with the Babbar Khalsa International and the Khalistan Zindabad Force.

SSP Harish Dayama said, “Such alerts are received every year ahead of the Republic Day. However, we are not taking any chances because of the attacks on the police stations.”

“We are bound to face the music if we are caught napping during the Republic Day and Independence Day events. That is why we are taking utmost care to make sure nothing goes wrong on January 26,” he said.

The recent sighting of the drones under the jurisdiction of the Kalanaur police station has made matters worse. Neither the BSF nor the Punjab Police have managed to find an antidote to these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Security has been enhanced by several layers at the Government College stadium where the R-Day festivities are slated to be organised.

SSP Dayama said after the Dera Baba Nanak Assembly bypoll, scores of cops were withdrawn and sent back to their parent stations. “Now, I have requested senior officers in Chandigarh to provide more security. Fifty police personnel are on their way to Gurdaspur and will be deputed at strategic locations,” he said.
