The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday constituted a 34-member panel to frame rules regarding the appointment, retirement and termination of services of the Akal Takht Jathedar.

The committee members were drawn from various Panthic organisations and Sikh intellectuals.

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said several Sikh organisations had already submitted their suggestions over the matter to them. “Now, this Committee will give its report,” he added.

The issue had snowballed into a major controversy earlier in the year when the SGPC removed jathedars of three Sikh Takhts, with critics blaming Punjab’s former ruling party SAD for it.
