The autistic children can indeed excel in sports and participation offers numerous benefits, including improved physical and social skills, and a sense of belonging.

Special Olympics Bharat is hosting its National Roller Skating Championship in Ludhiana at Leisure Valley, Sarabha Nagar, from March 29 to April 2, with 110 athletes from 20 states showcasing their speed, skill and determination.

“Determination, skill and passion are the driving forces behind every athlete. Among these remarkable individuals are athletes on the autism spectrum, who have not only excelled in their favourite game but also shattered stereotypes and inspired countless others,” said Niranjan Kumar, founder member of NGO Darpan.

Kulwinder Kaur, whose daughter participated in the skating championship, shared how joining a sport has given her daughter the wings to fly and infused another level of confidence in her. “I am happy that my daughter is busy in the game and channelising her energy in the right direction,” she said.

In March 2016, NGO Ashirwad and the district administration had opened a canteen at Ludhiana Mini-Secretariat called “Sashakt”, which was run by the persons of special ability. This canteen became a hit among officials, lawyers and visitors. However, the canteen was closed during the lockdown imposed in the wake of Covid-19 and couldn’t re-opened after things got back to normal.

Art and craft exhibitions are regularly held by these NGOs around festivals and articles like candles, diyas and other gifts items are prepared by them.
