The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today postponed its crucial meeting for empanelment of officers for the post of Punjab DGP.

The UPSC said the meeting was being postponed due to the Punjab Government’s insistence on taking September 30, 2021, as the cut-off date for eligibility of officers. The UPSC said it needed time to deliberate on the issue. The next date of meeting would be conveyed later.

Today’s meeting would have discussed officers who were eligible as per the October 5 cut-off date as decided by the UPSC earlier. The meeting scheduled today would have deliberated on names of three officers from the list of 10 recommended by the state government. With the postponement, the incumbent officiating DGP Sidharth Chattopadhyaya gets more days in office. Punjab is insisting on the September 30 cut-off so that incumbent DGP Sidharth Chattopadhyaya becomes eligible. Under the rules, the officer should have at least six months of service left for consideration to the minimum two-year tenure as the DGP of a state. — TNS
