Baljinder Singh, a construction worker, told The Tribune, “Some politicians visited my residence. I am thankful to them for their moral support as they stood by truth. However, I don’t need any financial help from anyone. I can manage things on my own. I just want everyone to stand with truth.”
Commenting on the murder, he added, “Whatever happens, happens for a reason.” Mehron, in a purported video that surfaced on social media after the killing of Kanchan, popularly called Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, had claimed responsibility for the murder.
However, his counsel has said the video might have been generated using artificial intelligence.
According to the police, Amritpal fled to the UAE just hours after allegedly killing Kanchan, a resident of Ludhiana, on the morning of June 10.
Her decomposed body was found in a car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan, along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway, on the night of June 11.
She had left her home on June 9 in her car. As per the post-mortem report, she was strangled. Her viscera report is awaited.
While Mehron, along with his alleged accomplices Ranjit Singh and an unidentified person, remains on the run, two others — Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh — are currently in judicial custody.
According to an affidavit filed by Mehron while contesting the 2022 Assembly election from Tarn Taran as a SAD (Amritsar) candidate, he is a diesel mechanic by profession.
His sister is settled in Australia while his elder brother works as a skilled labourer.
CCTV footage of vehicles goes viral
A CCTV camera footage showing an SUV followed by Kanchan’s car has also gone viral on social media. Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal has already claimed that these two vehicles were used to bring her from Ludhiana.
