Chandigarh, January 21

The state government has decided to implement the DigiLocker scheme to provide citizens a cloud platform for storage, issuance and verification of various important documents and certificates. In the first phase, the Punjab School Education Board, Transport and Labour Departments are putting their digitally signed documents related to citizen services in DigiLocker.

Talking to The Tribune, Vini Mahajan, Additional Chief Secretary, Governance Reforms, said all departments, including Revenue and Local Government, public sector undertakings, statutory authorities and autonomous bodies, besides all universities would now be asked to put all citizen service centric documents in DigiLocker. “These documents can then be verified for all other departments or any organisation which opts for online document verification from DigiLocker by providing details and after obtaining consent of the citizen concerned. This will help them produce requisite documents anytime in legally acceptable electronic form,” she said.

DigiLocker is a digital storage service, operated by the government that enables Indian citizens to store the documents on cloud. “It is a big step towards paperless governance,” said Mahajan.
