Amritpal Singh, the main accused in the case of vandalising of statues at the Heritage Street, was today sent to two-day police remand.

He was produced before a local court amid tight security. His supporters raised religions slogans against the police and the administration.

Talking to the mediapersons, he said he did not have any regrets about damaging the pedestal. He stated that the bhangra and giddha statues were a contravention of the Sikh maryada due to their proximity to the Golden Temple.

He claimed that they resorted to this act after their numerous representations and requests had failed to evince any response from the government.

On Wednesday morning, a group of Sikh youth had allegedly vandalised the pedestal on which the bronze statues of folk dancers are installed at the Heritage Street.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
