Abohar, September 6
Former PCC president Sunil Jakhar today appealed to the Congress leadership and workers to display unity and highlight achievements of the state government among people by going door to door.
“Now is the time to walk in harmony, not air differences. This is crucial for the party to win the next year’s Assembly elections,” he said during a visit to his native Panjkosi village.
Jakhar said party leaders and workers hadn’t been enthusiastic about listing government’s accomplishments, including an increase in social pension, which was unfortunate. The aim was to make such schemes reach as many people as possible and make public aware about the benefits.
The Congress government had tripled the social security pension from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 per month in less than five years, giving a relief to the weaker sections. This was in contrast to SAD-BJP government’s meagre hike of Rs 250 in old age and widow pensions over 10 years, said Jakhar.
The former state Congress president said: “Due to lack of unity in the party, we haven’t been able to highlight the development works carried out by the government. We have been unable to reach out to people with details of welfare schemes.”
He urged the leadership to ensure unity, saying it was time to get ready for the elections and not create confusion. “To tell people about achievements of the government, we will have to forget differences and walk together,” he asserted.
Jakhar distributed approval letters of increased pension to beneficiaries on the occasion.
