Barnala SSP Mohammad Sarfaraz Alam said the deceased were identified as Kiranjit Kaur (45), a widow, her daughter Sukhchainpreet Kaur (25), and son Harmanjit Singh (22).
The bodies of Kiranjit and Sukhchainpreet have been recovered from the canal downstream in Sirsa, Haryana, while efforts are underway to trace the body of Harmanjit. According to the SSP, the investigation revealed the involvement of Kulwant Singh alias Kanti, a close acquaintance of Kiranjit from the same village.
A case under Sections 140(1) and 127(2) of the BNS has been registered at the Barnala Sadar police station against the accused, who has already been arrested. During interrogation, Kulwant Singh confessed to murdering all three family members by pushing them into the Bhakra canal near Patiala.
The investigation revealed that the accused had a close relationship with Kiranjit Kaur and had allegedly embezzled about Rs 20 lakh from the sale proceeds of her land. When Kiranjit began demanding her money back, the accused hatched a plan to eliminate the family. On the night of October 26, Kulwant took the victims along under the pretext of visiting the Mata Naina Devi shrine. While returning, he deceitfully suggested offering a coconut and sweet rice at the Bhakra canal near Patiala and allegedly pushed all three into the water, leading to their deaths.
The SSP added that the investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events.
