Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranangal and former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma on Friday raised objection to Special Investigation Team (SIT) move of not providing them copies of all documents of challan. The SIT has submitted this challan some time ago in the District and Sessions Court here after completing a part of its investigation in the Kotkapura police firing incident of October 2015.

Though an accused is provided copy of all documents of challan by the investigating officer in a case, in the present case, the SIT has sought exemption in disclosure of some documents to the accused. Taking this exemption of not providing copies of all documents under Section 173 (6) of CrPC, the SIT claimed that the disclosure of some documents, including pen drives, mobile numbers, call details, CCTV recordings and some other sensitive information, to the accused was not essential in the interests of justice.

However, objecting to this stance of the SIT, Umranangal and Charanjit Sharma on Friday raised objection to this exemption and submitted their reply in the court demanding they be provided all documents which are part of the challan in the case. Other than Umranangal and Sharma, there are four other accused, two SP-rank police officers, a former Akali MLA and a former SHO in this case.

Last month, the sessions court had dismissed Umranangal and Sharma’s demand for the record of mobile phone call details of SIT members and their supporting staff who were probing the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police firing incidents. The court today adjourned the case to January 4.
