Want no future link with Sarbjit, sons tell police

As the Kapurthala police continue to probe the case involving Amanipur village resident Sarbjit Kaur who went missing from a Sikh jatha in Pakistan and was later found to have embraced Islam (as per news reports and videos), her sons have said they weren’t on speaking terms with her before she went to the neighbouring nation. They do not want any connection with her in the future too.

Sarbjit and her sons had a total of 12 cases against them — three against Sarbjit in which had she had been acquitted (or the matter had been settled) and nine against her two sons. Sarbjit was residing at Amanipur before going to Pakistan and her passport had also been deposited at Gurdwara Ber Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi.

Her family has maintained a studied silence, refusing to speak to the media. No one from her home has filed a missing person’s report. Following police questioning, her family have told the police that they had cut all connections with her.

Sources in the Kapurthala police told The Tribune, “Teams of the Kapurthala police have been visiting the village, where a team had also gone yesterday. Her sons have told the police that they don’t have anything to do with their mother. They were not speaking to her even before she went to Pakistan and do not want any connection with her in future. The police will continue the investigation with her family.”

Asked about the status of the probe, DSP, Sultanpur Lodhi, Dheerendra Verma said, “All past details of Sarbjit Kaur are being obtained for which a request had been sent. Her entire case is under investigation and anything further can only be said once we have the details.”

Meanwhile, speaking to The Tribune, SGPC member, Sultanpur Lodhi, Gupreet Kaur Roohi said, “A jatha leader informed me on the evening of November 13 that Sarbjit Kaur hadn’t returned. On November 14, we went to her house at Amanipur, where one of her sons was present. On being asked whether their mother hadn’t returned, he told us: Nahi aai haje, Asi nahi bolde ohde naal (She hasn’t come yet. We don’t speak with her.) I called the other son who was out. He also said the same thing. After this, we returned.”
