Wheat crop flooded due to canal breach

Several acres of wheat crops were submerged last night following a breach in the canal near village Dharangwala, located about 10 km from Abohar. The breach, which occurred in the Dharangwala minor (sub-canal), resulted in the flooding of surrounding fields, prompting immediate action from the Water Resources Department.

Farmers, including Varinder Singh and Tarsem Singh Sandhu, reported that the erosion extended about 30 feet and affected their wheat crops, as well as those of other farmers like Subhash Chander and Puran. The breach was noticed around 11 pm, and villagers made efforts to control the situation, but the gushing water quickly inundated multiple fields.

Upon receiving the news, department officials arrived at the site and began repair work, including reducing the water flow. The breach is expected to be plugged once the water supply is reduced from the controlling point.

Farmers have demanded compensation from the state government for the loss of crops. Officials believe that the breach was caused by an overflow of water following yesterday’s rain, which resulted in a sharp drop in the intake for the fields, ultimately leading to the breach.
