Due to the lack of a gynaecologist at the Civil Hospital in Abohar, a woman's delivery was performed by a staff nurse in the maternity ward last night, resulting in the death of not only the woman but also her child.

This resulted in deep anger among the entire family towards the hospital administration.

Deepak Kumar of Fazilka Road, Abohar, had brought his wife Pallavi to the government hospital last night for delivery. According to family members, there was no medical officer (MO) present in the ward at the time of the delivery, which was reportedly performed by a staff nurse.

The child died during the delivery and Pallavi's condition subsequently deteriorated, prompting the hospital administration to refer her to a private hospital.

The family said when they took Pallavi to the private hospital late at night, the doctor in-charge was not available there, forcing them to take her to another hospital, but she died on the way.

Pallavi's death brought a wave of grief in the family. Pallavi was already a mother of two children.

The Civil Surgeon said he would investigate the matter to determine why an MO was not present in the hospital at that time and how the delivery was being conducted in such a situation.

A board of three doctors has been formed to conduct the post-mortem to determine the exact cause of the death, official sources said.

MLA Sandeep Jakhar had met the Health Minister and senior bureaucrats three times in the past to request the appointment of two gynaecologists as per the sanctioned strength, but nothing was done even when more than 500 pregnant women visit the hospital each month. AAP halqa in charge Arun Narang had also taken up the issue with the minister two times in the recent past.
