A 45-year-old woman and her granddaughter drowned as the tractor they were travelling in plunged into a drain in Khubban village late last night .

Other than them, two other persons were also injured in the accident.

According to sources, 15-year-old Preeti had gone to visit her grandmother Harpal Kaur who was working in a paddy field. Both of them along with other labourers were on their way back home on a tractor when it lost balance after going over a pothole on the road and fell into the drain.

Farmer Surinder Kumar Chugh, with the help of others, took the victims out of the drain and immediately rushed them to the Community Health Center at Sitto Gunno.

Harpal and her granddaughter were referred to Abohar Civil Hospital. However, on reaching the hospital, the doctors declared them brought dead.

On receiving the news, ASI Balveer Singh rushed to the spot and started investigating the matter.
