Woman shot dead by intoxicated husband
A man allegedly shot dead his wife with his licensed revolver inside their house in the Shanti Nagar area of Moga on Tuesday morning.
The accused, Charanamrit Singh, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the shooting. The victim, Mandeep Kaur (45), died on the spot.
According to family members of the victim and sources, the couple had a history of domestic violence, often triggered by the husband's alcohol addiction. On Monday night, a violent altercation took place between them, after which Mandeep Kaur rang up the police and told cops that her husband was threatening to shoot her.
The police reached the house, but instead of confiscating the licensed revolver, already identified as a danger by the victim, chose to only counsel both parties and left the scene.
This apparent negligence by the police has now come under sharp criticism.
Terrified after the argument, Mandeep Kaur spent the night at a neighbour’s house. When she returned home this morning, Charanamrit Singh, still under the influence of alcohol, allegedly shot her dead from point-blank range.
The gunshot alarmed neighbours, who immediately informed the police.
Law enforcement and forensic teams arrived at the scene, arrested the accused, and seized the revolver used in the crime.
DSP (City) Moga, Ravinder Singh, confirmed the arrest and said further action would be taken based on statements of the victim’s family.
The victim is survived by three children — two daughters and a son. One daughter is married and resides in Amritsar, while the other two live abroad.
Jasbir Kaur, the deceased’s sister-in-law, blamed the police for Mandeep Kaur’s death, stating, “Had the police acted responsibly and confiscated the revolver the night before, this tragedy could have been avoided.”
Victim had rang up police
The victim had informed cops on Monday night that she faced threat to her life from her husband who had a revolver and was under the influence of alcohol, but cops only counselled both and left the scene. On Tuesday morning, the man, still intoxicated, shot dead his wife
