People in West Bengal’s Malda town had a taste of “cow-belt” politics on Tuesday as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave preference to cows over livelihood issues while speaking at an election meeting in the communally sensitive town.

Adityanath said if the BJP was elected to power in West Bengal, cow slaughter and theft would stop within 24 hours of the swearing in of the government.

Citing the example of his own state, he said after the BJP emerged victorious in Uttar Pradesh, illegal slaughterhouses shut operations almost immediately. He alleged that on the contrary, cattle smuggling was encouraged in the state.

Amid applause by a responsive crowd, Adityanath lambasted the ruling Trinamool Congress for allegedly pursuing appeasement politics and endangering national security by allowing illegal immigrants into the state for vote bank politics. Incidentally, Malda district, which shares border with Bangladesh, has a strong presence of Muslims.

Alleging that the Mamata government had turned a blind eye towards anti-social elements, Adityanath claimed that there had not been any riots in his state ever since he took over as the CM.

Responding to the charges, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the UP CM should worry about his own state.
