The SpaceX and Tesla CEO has announced that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is developing a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, a project he claims would be a major upgrade over the current standard.
The platform would be powered by Grok, xAI’s chatbot and competitor to ChatGPT, and is part of Musk’s broader vision of using AI to help humanity “understand the universe.”
“We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia,” Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. “Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”
What is Grokipedia?
According to Musk, Grokipedia aims to offer more accurate, transparent and diverse information than Wikipedia. The content will be generated using Grok, which has been trained on a wide range of internet sources, including public posts on X.
The move comes amid ongoing debates over online information, media bias, and the role of large platforms in shaping public knowledge. Musk has long criticised Wikipedia for what he views as bias and a lack of neutrality.
The internet reacts
The announcement sparked a flurry of responses across social media. Many users expressed curiosity and excitement, while others questioned how Grokipedia would work in practice.
“Finally! Hopefully, this will be curated better,” one user wrote.
Others imagined bold futures:
“We need a Trantor-level xAI Galactic Library… Grokipedia could be like the Encyclopedia Galactica meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
Some were more skeptical:
“Grok uses Wikipedia data in most answers… so how exactly will Grokipedia be better?”
“Unless it includes a wider range of sources, won’t it just repeat the same biases?” another user added.
