Born in Delhi but raised in Kalka, my early years were spent in quiet charm of a slower, simpler world. Kalka, with its hill-station vibe, gentle summers, and walk-able streets, was my home until the ninth grade. Life was delightfully unhurried. There were no school buses or cars — we walked everywhere.

A recent reunion with two old classmates brought many of these cherished memories back: the golgappa stall where the owner served the delectable street food with seven tangy flavours of water; the paanwala at Gandhi Chowk who added extra gulkand and supari sometimes. A piece of burfi, samosa, and a glass of tea costed just 6 paisa each at the railway canteen but were luxuries nevertheless.

The pristine Kalka railway station, gateway to Shimla via motorcar or the toy train, — framed those golden days. My father’s unused bicycle still stands as a relic of those carefree days.

Post retirement, I have settled in Mohali and life is back to a somewhat unhurried pace but the heart still yearns for those innocent times…. Kaash koi lauta de mere beete huye din.

GP Singh, Mohali
