Amritsar, with its spiritual vibes, has always captivated me. The iconic Golden Temple with its sprawling campus and the sacred Amrit sarovar has drawn me like bees to a honeypot.

Whenever I visit the city, I make it a point to stay close to the Golden Temple complex so as to soak in the serenity surrounding the holy institution and to make a quick visit whenever I feel the urge. I usually go to the Golden Temple at the crack of dawn to soak in its serene atmosphere with devotees performing the parikrama or sometimes some sitting around the holy complex immersed in deep meditation.

The langar, run in such a disciplined and efficient manner by sewadars, is impressive. Never before have I witnessed so many devotees of all faiths sitting and eating together.

As I step out, I see volunteers washing the used utensils with discipline and devotion. It is quite a touching sight.

When I come out of the complex, the hustle and bustle of the city is energetic. Soon, the lure and flavours of city’s special dishes like Amritsari kulcha, sarson da saag with makki di roti, dal makhani and lassi, overtake the senses.

I have been to the Golden Temple thrice, the recent being in December last year, but the longing to go back never leaves me.
