The Patiala Railway Station has been undergoing renovations for an extended period, with the goal of transforming it into a modern architectural landmark. Its distinctive design requires passengers to navigate from the train’s engine to the guard’s compartment to access their designated bogie on Platform 1—unlike other stations where one can board from the middle and move left or right as needed.

With only two platforms flanking the railway tracks, the station is small yet tidy, evoking the charm of Malgudi Station from RK Narayan’s works. Train connectivity to Delhi remains limited, as many routes bypass Patiala in favour of Rajpura, the region’s primary railway junction. However, with Rajpura poised to become a major industrial hub in the near future, an increase in train frequency is anticipated. Interestingly, passengers can sometimes drive close to their bogie — provided the ticket-checking staff allows entry through the back gate, a common practice in their absence.

The ongoing construction has caused significant disruptions, particularly beneath the flyover near the railway station. Damaged roads at the junction have made navigation challenging for commuters heading toward NH-7. Meanwhile, vendors have taken advantage of the shaded space under the flyover, setting up temporary stalls.

Once completed, the station’s final facade is expected to be a visual delight. But the pressing question remains: When?
