The Archery Association of India (AAI) has announced the start of the Archery League that will feature the top-10 archers — both men and women — from recurve and compound disciplines.

The league will feature foreign archers as well as top Indian archers who will all be representing six franchise teams. The first edition of the league will be held in October and is expected to take place over an 11-day period at the Yamuna Sports Complex here. The matches will be held under lights where recurve and compound archers will hit the target from 70 and 50 metres, respectively.

“Our archers have been hoping to get an opportunity to showcase their skills on the biggest stage. We are confident that with the help of the Archery League, we will be able to fulfil these dreams and provide more opportunities. Let us all join hands to launch this league for archery so that we can take the sport to the next level in the country,” AAI president Arjun Munda said.

AAI secretary general Virendra Sachdeva said that the league will help Indian archers to achieve bigger success. “The Archery league will be highly competitive and help to prepare our archers for the ultimate stage, the Olympics. This is more than just a league, it’s a stepping stone toward India’s Olympics dream,” he said.

World Archery’s secretary general Tom Dielen announced that the league has the backing of the world body as well. “I am very pleased with this initiative because it will add to the impact of our sport and create an atmosphere of competitive spirit for Indian archers as well as other archers coming from outside of India to enhance their performance and become even better archers in future,” he said.
