Ahead of the much-anticipated group stage match on Tuesday, Indian players warmly greeted their Pakistani counterparts with high-fives following the national anthems. The match, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, concluded with players from both sides shaking hands, emphasising camaraderie and mutual respect on the field.
This comes just weeks after a starkly different scene unfolded during the Asia Cup cricket tournament. The Indian cricket team refrained from any handshakes or post-match gestures with Pakistan.
The decision reportedly followed the terror attack in Pahalgam and India's Operation Sindoor, with the team later dedicating their Asia Cup win to the victims' families.
Adding to the tension, the Indian team chose not to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan's Interior Minister.
In contrast, the hockey match offered a refreshing display of maturity and restraint.
According to PTI, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had instructed its players to avoid any confrontations and focus solely on the game. A PHF official noted, "Players were told to be prepared in case the Indian team didn’t offer handshakes. They were advised to remain composed and avoid emotional responses."
