ITF, Grand Slams pledge $400,000 to bushfires relief

Syndey: The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and three Grand Slams — Wimbledon, US Open and French Open — have collectively pledged $400,000 to Australian bushfire relief efforts, the sport’s international governing body said today. 28 people have been killed and thousands made homeless in recent months as huge fires scorched through 11.2 million hectares, nearly half the area of the United Kingdom. The money, which is in addition to the funds raised by Tennis Australia’s Aces for Bushfire Relief campaign, will be donated to the Australian Red Cross which has helped thousands in evacuation centres and aided volunteers and relief workers. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.

The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
