Kohli getting out to same type of bowling is a concern, says Gavaskar

Kohli’s repeated dismissal to spin due to an open-faced bat is worrying, says legendary Sunil Gavaskar

Kohli, 36, was dismissed for 22 in India's opening match against Bangladesh, marking his sixth consecutive ODI dismissal against spin. This follows a tough tour of Australia, where he struggled against fast bowlers in the off-side corridor.

“It is to a great extent due to the bat face opening up, whether against spin or pace,” Gavaskar told India Today. “That gets him into trouble, and he’ll have to watch out for it.

"A couple of times before he got out, he reached for Rishad, the ball turned, the bat face opened, and luckily the bat face opened, and so there was no nick. So that is something that he'll have to tighten up on now," Gavaskar said.

"But yes, I guess if you're getting out to the same kind of bowling, then you know, there is a bit of concern,” he added.

Kohli, who was a top performer in the 2023 ODI World Cup with 765 runs in 11 matches, has struggled this year, averaging just 22.83 in ODIs. His Test form has also been inconsistent, scoring only 440 runs in 11 matches since 2024.

With a crucial Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan on Sunday in Dubai, India will hope for a turnaround in Kohli’s form as they aim to reclaim the trophy after 12 years.
