Ankita, up against higher-ranked Belgian Greet Minnen, could win only two games in the entire match that lasted one hour and 21 minutes. The 125th-ranked Indian converted only one of the three break points and eventually lost 2-6 0-6.

It was her seventh attempt to crack the singles main draw of a Major.

Another Indian, Ramkumar Ramanathan, lost in the second round of men’s singles qualifiers. The 215th-ranked Ramanathan lost 1-6 2-6 to world No. 33 and Asian Games champion Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. — Agencies
