Rohit Sharma was appointed the captain of the Indian cricket Test team today while Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, important batsmen who are going through a protracted rough patch, have been dropped for the series against Sri Lanka.

The selectors have also dropped two other veterans Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma. “Rohit was the unanimous choice,” chief selector Chetan Sharma said. Rohit was appointed captain of the ODI and T20I teams in December. Rohit is himself in the final stage of his international career and is expected to hold the job while the team management grooms potential captains. “Rohit is the No. 1 cricketer of our country and the most important thing is that he is playing all three formats,” Chetan said. —
