Serena Williams was sent spinning out of the Western and Southern Open by Maria Sakkari yesterday after the Greek rallied from a set down to beat the 23-time Grand Slam champion 5-7 7-6(5) 6-1 and reach the quarterfinals.
Sakkari next faces Briton Johanna Konta.
Earlier, Naomi Osaka beat Dayana Yastremska 6-3 6-1, while Victoria Azarenka beat Alize Cornet 6-4 7-5.
Top seed Novak Djokovic made quick work of Tennys Sandgren, never dropping serve en route to a 6-2 6-4 win, while big-serving Milos Raonic enjoyed a 6-2 6-2 win over Andy Murray.
Djokovic reached the quarterfinals and extended his win-loss record to 20-0 this year. Defending champion Daniil Medvedev beat Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-3, while Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated John Isner 7-6(2) 7-6(4). — Reuters
