As many as 10,574 Indians, including under-trials are currently lodged in foreign prisons, said MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a written response to a question in Parliament.
The number of Indians awaiting death penalty in foreign jails is 43. The highest number of Indians facing death penalty is 21 in UAE, seven in Saudi Arabia, four in China, three in Indonesia, and one each in the US, Yemen (Nimisha Priya) and Pakistan.

The government also revealed that a total of 28 Indian fishermen are in Sri Lankan custody (as per data till July 15), 27 of whom are from Tamil Nadu and one from Puducherry.
