Pakistan's Dream Bazaar turns nightmare: Karachi mall looted on opening day

The grand opening of Pakistan's Dream Bazaar Mall in Karachi did not go the way they had thought it to be.  As soon as it opened, a group of people forcibly entered the venue, causing widespread vandalism and destruction of property.

Built by a Pakistani businessman living abroad, the mall was heavily publicised on social media and heavy discounts were offered on its opening day, ARY News reported.

Soon after opening its doors at 3 pm, viral videos circulating on social media show hundreds of people storming in and vandalising property and loot stores.

The staff could not manage the crowd and people went on a stealing spree.

They grabbed whatever they could lay their hands on. However, police were notably absent from the spot.

Videos also showed aftermath of the rampage as the entire building was left with clothes scattered all over the floor, and shattered glass all around.

People also filmed themselves as they looted the store.

“It's unfortunate to see such an exciting development turn into a chaotic situation. While the intention behind offering special discounts to locals was admirable, it's clear that better planning and security measures were needed to prevent the mall from being looted,” wrote one user.

Another commented: “What else can you expect from a country where lawlessness is the norm? A place where even a generous gesture turns into chaos. This incident speaks volumes about the state of affairs in Pakistan.”.
