In what looked like the start of a clean state seems to have been hindered by nature’s force. On 31st December, 17:36 (EST), the Empire state building, one World Trade Center and the US Capitol were all struck by lightning.

While scientifically, the phenomenon makes sense due to the positive charge of the building interacting with the negative charge of the cloud, many users were quick to link it as a sign of things to come.

One user tweeted “it’s going to be Biblical” while linking and AI generated image signifying Trump’s transition to power. Another user joined this train by tweeting “Cheers to 2025, that strike seems like an Omen for Biden to leave and Let President Donald Trump in”.

Among these were people carrying the common thought, that the phenomenon is common. A third user tweeted, “I have lots of people telling me it’s a tweet or omen. Much of it based on their own political beliefs. I also think it’s a sign that. A sign that lightning often strikes the tallest objects.”

Considering how explosive the election was and with the fate of two nations, Ukraine and Palestine, influenced heavily by the United States, it remains to be seen what the new year and a familiar transition brings to the table.
