In a bid to protect underage users from the cons of social media, Meta has introduced a new feature — Teen Accounts — on Instagram with advanced safety measures.

With the introduction of this new feature, Instagram aims to prevent anxiety, addiction, cyberbullying and low self-esteem among teens. This update defaults accounts of underage users — between 13 and 17 — to private and limits their interactions on the platform, safeguarding them from harmful content and individuals.

Content restrictions have also been introduced that would limit the chances of exposure to inappropriate content available on the platform. To minimise the time spent on Instagram, teens will also get notifications to set time limits on how long they use the app.

Parents' Supervision Feature is another step towards creating a teen-friendly platform. With this feature, parents will be able limit screen time of their children, besides monitoring their interactions on the app.
