‘Sahab main hi hoon’: Datia Collector Swapnil Wankhede’s interaction with elderly man goes viral

A heartwarming incident unfolded during a public hearing in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district, when an elderly man failed to recognise a senior official.

The elderly man, who arrived with a grievance about delayed pension, approached Datia Collector Swapnil Wankhede, and asked “Can you take me to the Collector Sahab?”

Although the Collector introduced himself, the man repeatedly insisted on meeting “the real sahab.” The 2016-batch IAS officer urged him to submit his application, but the senior citizen appeared confused and reluctant to believe that the person before him was indeed the District Collector.

The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media, drawing admiration for the officer’s humility and patience.

Noticing the man’s nervousness, the officer took his papers, reviewed the documents, and calmly said: “Don’t worry. I’ll get your work done, and your pension will start soon.”

Reassured, the elderly man folded his hands in gratitude and blessed the officer.

Wankhede’s humility captured the attention of viewers online. Many on social media praised him for his simple demeanour and approachability, noting that such interactions strengthen trust between the public and the administration.

“India will change for better if more such officers are available,” wrote one user. “This is how public service must be exemplified…kudos to such nice hearted officers who are still in the system,” said another.

Earlier, another interaction involving Wankhede and a minor orphan girl and her siblings had also gone viral, in which he helped secure monthly aid and educational support for them.

At a time when government officials often delay public work and make people return repeatedly, Wankhede’s proactive approach and willingness to help those in need exemplify the true spirit of public service.
