Victoria Kjaer Theilvig’s Miss Universe win sparks social media frenzy

A 21-year-old Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark was crowned Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico City on Saturday. She beat 120 other contestants and became the first Danish woman to win the title. However, the victory has sparked widespread sarcastic remarks online following the pageant’s return to a more traditional format, even as it permitted married, plus-size, and transgender women to participate.

The 2023 competition featured a transgender contestant, Rikkie Valerie Kolle from Portugal, who was placed in the top 20 following her win as the first transgender woman crowned Miss Netherlands, earlier that year.

However, Theilvig’s victory has surprised some social media users. Many of them celebrate the winner being a ‘biological’ woman, in comparison with the pageant’s recent focus on diversity and inclusion.

According to reports by Daily Mail, political commentator Matt Wallace wrote, ‘BREAKING: Fans shocked after straight, white, biological woman wins Miss Universe 2024’. Another user commented, ‘Yes an actual white biological female won the pageant – the World is healing’.

Even billionaire Elon Musk weighed in, sharing a meme that read, ‘Breaking: internet stunned after an attractive biological female human of healthy weight wins Miss Universe pageant’.
